Inherit announces world's first BECCS project from wastewater

Oslo, 22 October 2024 – Inherit Carbon Solutions and Norway's largest wastewater treatment plant Veas, with subsidiary Hoop CO2, have entered into a ground-breaking collaboration to realize the world's very first carbon removal from wastewater.
“This first of a kind carbon removal project represents a crucial step in the fight against climate change”, says Kaja Voss, Co-CEO & founder at Inherit Carbon Solutions.
CO2 capture and storage will be carried out on the wastewater from residents of Oslo, Asker, Bærum and Nesodden. This is the first step in building a global solution that is of great importance for the fight against climate change worldwide.
At Veas' treatment plant in Slemmestad, CO₂ from the wastewater will be captured, and then transported and stored permanently. The project is initially expected to capture and store over 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
We are proud to collaborate with a player like Veas to make carbon removal from wastewater a reality and believe that this can be a precursor to similar projects worldwide. Wherever there is sewage, there will be CO₂, and this can be a source to also reduce the amount of CO2 from the atmosphere, says Voss. We are very proud that the first project of its kind, for which there is massive global potential, will be here in Norway.
Norway's largest
The treatment plant at Veas is the largest in Norway, and has been crucial for the purification of wastewater for the population in the Oslo region. Jan Berge in Veas and CEO of Hoop CO2 in Veas says that this venture will take this work to a new level.

Note: Hoop CO2 is a wholly owned subsidiary of Veas, which is owned by the municipalities of Oslo, Asker and Bærum.
